Preventing Frozen Pipes

February 1st, 2024

It’s getting to that time of year again when we swap our closets for our winter boots, warm coats, and gloves. But is your home also ready for the cold weather? Frozen pipes can lead to costly repairs. Here are some tips to get ahead of the freeze!

Outdoor Plumbing

  • Remove/disconnect outdoor sprinklers and store them somewhere safe.
  • Hoses should be removed from outdoor spigots. Close the indoor water supply valve.
  • Add insulation to keep heat in.
  • Outdoor kitchens should be winterized ahead of time.

Indoor Plumbing

  • If you leave for the winter, consider winterizing the home while you are away.
  • Keep your garage doors closed.
  • Keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature. Even at night or when no one is home.
  • Open cabinets to let heat circulate, especially for exterior wall plumbing like kitchen sinks.
  • On especially cold days, let the cold water drip from faucets on exposed pipes.
