Plumbing tools and materials

If you operate your water-using appliances and fixtures responsibly, you should be able to avoid plumbing issues for a long time. However, you will eventually encounter a clog or leak, at which point you’ll need the right tools to handle the situation. If you ever feel out of your depth, consider having a plumbing company perform repairs instead.

The plunger is perhaps the best known plumbing tool, and can be used to clear clogs in toilets and sink drains. To use a plunger, make sure the suction cup is directly over the drain and completely submerged in water, then begin moving the tool up and down. If a plunger doesn’t do the trick, you might try a plumber’s snake, which is a long, flexible auger designed to physically remove clogs. If you need to dismantle or install a section of your plumbing system, you’ll need slip-joint pliers and a pipe wrench.
