A plumbing emergency can occur with virtually any plumbing fixture in the house at any hour. If you know what to do to prepare for a plumbing emergency, you can minimize both damage and stress. Take the following steps to take care of a plumbing emergency before calling a Libertyville plumber.

Find the Appliance’s Shut-Off Valve
The first step is to shut off the water going to the appliance. Each plumbing fixture—including toilets, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and faucets—should have a dedicated shut-off valve. If it’s a freestanding fixture such as a faucet or toilet, you can find the shut-off valve near the water supply line, which is somewhere between the fixture and either the wall or the floor. The kitchen sink and dishwasher are integrated into the counter, so you will probably find their shut-off valves somewhere under the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, it can be very hard to stop water from flowing into bathtubs and showers, because their shut-off valves are usually hidden behind the wall.

Turn the Shut-Off Valve
If the appliance is free-flowing water and you are unable to stop it by turning its shut-off valve, you’ll need to go outside to shut off the water going into the house. You can find this outside somewhere by the edge of your property next to your water meter. Sometimes the shut-off valve is under a metal lid that needs to be unbolted, so you may need to bring a toolbox.

Tend to the Appliance
To fully take care of the plumbing emergency, you’ll need to fix the appliance that’s causing problems. It’s highly recommended to let a plumber take care of this; if you do not have any plumbing experience, a mistake can be very costly.
